Why CR7 Won’t Equal Messi FIFA Ballon d’Or Record
Cristiano Ronaldo has competed with Lionel Messi for the FIFA Ballon d'Or award in the last few years, but the Portuguese won't be able to equal the FC Barcelona star's record.
France Football will have sole ownership of the Ballon d’Or accolade, after the French publication ended their agreement with FIFA.
The original Ballon d'Or was crated in 1956, while the FIFA Ballon d'Or was founded in 2010 and has been dominated by Messi and Ronaldo, with latter winning four compared to two for the Portuguese.
Players and coaches were allowed to join journalists in deciding the nominations for the FIFA Ballon d'Or, but France Football have only decided to use representatives of the media for their award.
Both Ronaldo and Messi have won the original award once in their respective careers before France Football merged with FIFA in 2010.
While, Former Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan star George Weah is the only African to win the Ballon d'Or prize.
