For a third time this season, both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo failed to score in the same game week – why are the two superstars struggling?
Messi was only a shadow of his usual self during FC Barcelona’s embarrassing 4-1 defeat to Celta Vigo, while Ronaldo also failed to shine in his side’s 2-1 win at Athletic Bilbao.
It was already the third time this season that both superstars drew a blank during the same game week, something that has only happened three times over the last three seasons combined.
It is true that Ronaldo is at the top of the Spanish goal-scoring charts, but his five goals have all come in one game when he destroyed Espanyol.
Since his five-goal show, he has failed to hit the back of the net in two La Liga matches, having also failed to net a goal in the opening two games of this campaign.
Messi, meanwhile, also failed to score during his first two league games and now drew his third blank at Celta Vigo.
The Argentine boasts three goals after scoring one against Atletico Madrid and a brace against Levante last Sunday.
It seems unusual that both Messi and Ronaldo are struggling to score, but surely it will only be a matter of time until the goals are flying in on a weekly basis once again.
Ronaldo has his next chance to shine when Real host Malaga, who are yet to score in the league, while Messi and Barcelona welcome newly promoted Las Palmas.
