The ongoing rivalry between La Liga giants Real Madrid and FC Barcelona didn’t stop this former Los Blancos star from naming his son after Lionel Messi.
Former Italy international and Real player, Antonio Cassano, revealed that because he feels that Messi is the best player in football, he named his son ‘Lionel’ after the Argentina superstar.
“Messi is the greatest in the history of football,” he told Italia 1.
“Many say that Diego Maradona did more to win a World Cup, but those were different times.
“Leo is the best, and that's why I named my son after him.”
Cassano touched on the comparison between Messi and his former club’s current star player, Cristiano Ronaldo, saying Messi is the Rodger Federer of football, and Ronaldo is like Rafael Nadal.
“He and Ronaldo are two great players, but different,” he added.
“If we compare it to tennis, Ronaldo is like Nadal, Messi is Federer.”
Cassano spent a season at Real after joining them from Sampdoria in 2007, scoring four goals and assisting three times before departing back to the Italian club in 2008.
The 27-year-old Messi, who has been regarded as one of football’s best ever players, has played 479 times for Barcelona, scoring 408 goals.
