Cristiano Ronaldo, whose stunning bicycle kick against Juventus was named the 2017/18 Uefa Goal of the Season, will have to beat longstanding rival Lionel Messi to defend his title after both made the shortlist for the 2018/19 award.

Uefa announced the illustrious shortlist on Friday, with Messi and Ronaldo being the standout names.
The Portuguese striker was nominated for his stunning volley against Manchester United in the Uefa Champions League group stage in November 2018.
Messi, meanwhile, made the shortlist with his superb free-kick in the first leg of FC Barcelona's UCL semi-final against eventual winners Liverpool.
His club teammate Ivan Rakitic is also among the nominees for his spectacular strike against Tottenham Hotspur in the UCL group stage, while Chelsea winger Pedro Rodriguez is also in contention for his cheeky lob against Slavia Praha in the Uefa Europa League.
Rennes and Senegal winger Ismaila Sarr is the only African on the shortlist, and he was selected for his incredible long-range belter against Jablonec in the UEL group stage.

Note: All goals scored in Uefa competitions, including the UCL, UEL, Uefa Nations League, Uefa European Championship qualification, Uefa Super Cup and Uefa-related youth and women's tournaments in 2018/19 were taken into consideration.
