Cristiano Ronaldo may be on an incredible scoring streak in Italy, but a former Ballon d'Or winner has now insisted that those who think the Juventus star is better than Lionel Messi "know nothing about football".

The Portuguese forward has scored in his past 11 Serie A games, the joint-best run in the league's history.
In this form, he could become a favourite for the next Ballon d'Or, which would be his sixth and put him level with longstanding rival Messi in their ongoing battle for the prestigious accolade.
However, former Golden Ball winner Marco van Basten has now insisted Ronaldo is nowhere near as good as the Argentine.
"Cristiano is a great player, but those who say he is better than Messi know nothing about football, or they are saying it in bad faith," the Dutchman told Corriere dello Sport.
"Messi is one of a kind. Impossible to imitate and impossible to repeat. A player like him comes along every 50 or 100 years. As a kid, he fell into the football genius pot."
While Van Basten had to retire at the age of 28, he had already won three Ballons d'Or by then, and he seemingly believes he could have matched Ronaldo or Messi's tally if his career had not been cut short due to injury.
"I basically stopped playing at 28. I had already won three Ballons d'Or. Just look at Ronaldo and Messi, both over 30, where they are now," he added.
