Messi has lifted six European Golden Shoes and is the current holder of the award, while Ronaldo ended the season as Europe’s top goalscorer four times.
Since 2007/08, Diego Forlan (2008/09) and Luis Suarez (2015/16) are the only two players other than the superstar duo to have claimed the accolade.
However, with Ronaldo and Messi not getting any younger, a new generation is ready to take over from them, and Timo Werner is leading the chase among the players aged 23 or younger.
The Red Bull Leipzig striker has netted 18 goals in the Bundesliga in 2019/20, more than any other U23 player in Europe's top five leagues.
He is followed by Manchester United's Marcus Rashford, who took his tally to 14 strikes with a brace against Norwich City on the weekend.
Chelsea's Tammy Abraham completes the podium with 13 goals, while Mbappe, who was the leading U23 scorer last season, is in in fourth spot with 11 strikes to his name.
Lille and Nigeria forward Victor Osimhen is the only African star in the top 10, which also includes the likes of Lautaro Martinez, Gabriel Jesus and Jadon Sancho.
