The International Centre for Sports Studies (CIES), a Swiss-based football statistics institute, has analysed the top dribblers in Europe's top five leagues.
Eden Hazard sits at the top of the ranking, having attempted 6.4 dribbles on average per game and completing 75% of those. He is followed by Neymar, who, with 7.3 per game, attempted more dribbles but only has a succession rate of 62%.
CIES calculated a "dribbling index" for all analysed players and while Hazard's index score is 100, Neymar only received 94. Messi completes the top three with a dribbling index of 70 after attempting 5.5 dribbles per game and succeeding with 62% of them.
The football stats institute explain their algorithm as follows: "The dribbling index is calculated by multiplying the average number of dribbles achieved per 90 minutes with the percentage of successful ones. This allows us to take into account both the quantity and quality of dribbles."
Hazard, Neymar and Messi are the only players to achieve a dribbling index of over 56, while Ronaldo, who was known for his skilful dribbles at Manchester United, did not make the top 100.
