Montenegrin forward Dragan Boskovic, who plays for Bangkok United in the Thai top flight, has hit the back of the net on 38 occasions this year.
Below Messi in third spot is Sporting Lisbon forward Bas Dost with 34 goals in the calendar year, while JaJa Coelho, who represents Thai club Buriram United, has scored the same number as the Dutchman.
Fifth in the standings is Paris Saint-Germain attacker Edinson Cavani on 32 goals in 2017, just one strike more than Bayern Munich talisman Robert Lewandowski on 31 goals.
Tottenham Hotspur forward Harry Kane and Lazio striker Ciro Immobile follow with 29 strikes for the year, while Brazilian veteran Vagner Love, who plays his football for Aytemiz Alanyaspor in Turkey, has scored 27 goals.
Napoli attacker Dries Mertens, who is 10th on the list, has also scored 27 goals so far this year.
