FC Barcelona are reportedly closing in on a deal to sign Brazilian superstar Neymar, but one of the Blaugrana's former directors has revealed his shock at the club's willingness to sanction a deal.
With less than a week to go before the European transfer window closes, negotiations between Barca and Paris Saint-Germain have intensified in order to conclude a deal.
Meetings between officials of the two clubs were reportedly held on Tuesday afternoon, and it is believed that the financial aspects of the transfer are all that remain to be settled.
Former Blaugrana director Toni Freixa has revealed his shock at Barcelona's interest in Neymar, however, claiming that the negotiations are not in the club's interests and have the potential to financially cripple the LaLiga giants.
"What we are closer to is to jeopardise the sports project and the economic sustainability. I don't understand what interests are at stake, but those of Barca are sure not," Freixa told Radio Marca.
The 50-year-old also shared his belief that Lionel Messi's name was being used to divert attention away from the agenda of those who sought to benefit from the Neymar deal.
"I'm dumbfounded with all this. I don't understand anything. I hope it's a lie. The trap of this operation is to make us believe that Messi is the one who asks Neymar to distract attention."
Neymar has made it clear he wants to return to the reigning LaLiga champions, and has not featured in any of PSG's fixtures so far this season.
