Spain captain Sergio Ramos has responded to Diego Maradona's recent criticism by insisting that FC Barcelona's Lionel Messi is a far better player than he ever was.
Earlier this week, Maradona suggested that the Real Madrid defender isn't a real leader, or at least not in the way Atletico Madrid and Uruguay stalwart Diego Godin is.
Speaking after his side's 1-0 victory over Iran on Wednesday, Ramos took the opportunity to hit back at the Argentine, claiming that Messi is a far superior footballer than he was.
"In Argentina, they know that Maradona is light years away from the best Argentine player in history, which, for me, is Lionel Messi," Ramos said, as quoted by Marca.
The Spaniard also touched on his side's underwhelming performance against Iran.
"They (Iran) went out to waste time, whereas we like to win in a different way," he added.
"We leave happy. We've taken another step forward, and now we have to try to top our group, it's our objective.
"I still think we can improve in all aspects."
La Furia Roja will play Morocco in their final Group B game at Kaliningrad Stadium on Tuesday.
