Eto'o played for FC Barcelonja between 2004 and 2009, and experienced Messi's breakthrough to the club's first team first-hand.
The retired Cameroon striker has now explained that he is still proud of an important piece of advice he gave Messi in the early stages of his career.
"(Messi) confessed to me that, thanks to my advice, which I am not going to reveal, his career had changed," Eto'o told DAZN.
"One day, he said: 'Thanks to Samuel (Eto'o), my career changed.'
"He had to fix two or three things but he has always had the talent.
"I am proud and happy to see that he has written history which has yet to be finished, and it will be very difficult to beat what he has written."

While Eto'o opted to not reveal the advice he gave Messi, the Argentine himself may have spilled the beans on it recently.
"I remember Eto'o told me 'The day you start scoring goals, it's going to be… because you have a lot of chances and you don't finish them,'" Messi said in January.
"Then one day it clicked, they went in."
