Messi won the main award at FIFA's gala event last month, but it was later revealed that the FC Barcelona superstar had voted for Mane as his pick to be crowned the world's best player.
Ahead of Senegal's friendly international against Brazil, the Liverpool forward responded to questions about Messi's vote for him.
"It's a nice compliment, I really appreciate that," Mane said, as reported by futaa.
"But the important thing for me is to never give up, to keep on trying my best every day."
Mane ultimately ended up fifth in the voting, behind Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Liverpool teammates Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah.
The 27-year-old was later in action for Senegal against five-time world champions Brazil on Thursday afternoon, in what was the first-ever meeting between the two nations.
