The 37-year-old, who lifted the award formerly known as FIFA World Player of the Year in 2004 and 2005, believes that last year's final three will again be on the podium this year.

"I think it'll be between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi once again," he told FIFA.

"There are very good players all over the world, but those two continue to make the difference.

"Neymar is enjoying a rich vein of form, he has every chance of being on the three-man shortlist. As a fellow Brazilian, I hope that he takes up the mantle when Cristiano and Messi drop their level a bit."

The FIFA awards gala will take place on 23 October in London this year, and for the first time, FIFA will also announce The Best Goalkeeper of the past season.

Not only has the date of the awards changed, the next FIFA The Best Men's Player will be selected based on his performances in the 2016/17 season, ending with the FIFA Confederations Cup – previously, the FIFA awards were based on performances throughout a calendar year.
