Before making the move to the Catalan giants in 2003, the 2002 FIFA World Cup winner represented the French giants in Ligue 1, making 77 appearances across all competitions for the club.
It was in Spain, though, where Ronaldinho rose to prominence as one of the best footballers in the world, and where he began playing alongside a young Messi in Barcelona's forward line.
In a recent interview, the 41-year-old admitted that the Argentine is a "true friend" to him and that he would never have imagined his former Blaugrana colleague playing for another club in his career.
"When I arrived in Barcelona, there was already talk of a fantastic young man like Messi. And later, when we trained together, I saw his quality," Ronaldinho told Le Parisien.
"In each game and in each training session, we saw that it was different. It was a pleasure watching him do it. He became a true friend to me.
"I am very happy to see him at the club where I started in Europe. It is something that I did not think about in my life.
"He was sure that his career at Barcelona would end. And, for me, it was a surprise. As I like PSG, it was a surprise, but I never thought I would see him with another shirt that was not the Barcelona one."
Ronaldinho attended PSG's 3-2 win over RB Leipzig in the UEFA Champions League this week, and was seen embracing Messi before the game got underway.
The Argentine went on to score twice to inspire Mauricio Pochettino's side to an impressive comeback victory after being 2-1 down.
