Although he was announced as the winner of the 2019 Ballon d'Or in Paris on Monday night, when FC Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi actually found out he would win the accolade has now reportedly been revealed.

In the build-up to the awards evening in the capital of France, it appeared to be a common thought that the Argentine was going to win the prestigious accolade ahead of Virgil van Dijk and Cristiano Ronaldo.
With Messi's family and delegates from Barcelona present on the night, the 32-year-old winning the accolade seemed a foregone conclusion, and it now seems it was.
Pascal Ferre, the editor of France Football – who are the organisers of the Ballon d'Or – has recalled his conversation with Messi in November, when he informed the forward he would be winning the prize.
"It was a very natural conversation," Ferre said, according to The Statesman.
"I told him that I wanted to talk about the Ballon d'Or, that I had news to give him, and he told me he had heard rumours.
"I responded to him like this: 'well, they are not rumours, I am announcing to you officially that you have won the Ballon d'Or.'
"And then he started to ask me, 'For real? For real? For real?'
"I told him many times, and I responded to him that, yes, yes, yes, he is the winner."
