FC Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi has been named as football's highest earner, above Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo and teammate Neymar.
According to France Football, the Argentine remains the world's best paid footballer, with a reported annual income of €74 million (R1.2 billion).
It is believed that Messi's earnings from last year increased by €9 million (R151 million), while Los Blancos' Ronaldo is in second, earning €67.4 million a year (R1.1 billion). Neymar earns €43.5 million (R722 million) per annum.
The report added that the estimates were based on sponsorship incomes, bonuses and the players' pre-tax salaries.
It was also claimed that former Manchester United winger Angel Di Maria is the top-earning star in France, with a €24 million (R403 million) annual income, following his move to Paris Saint-Germain at the beginning of the season.
Jose Mourinho is the highest earning coach, with €24 million (R403 million) in annual earnings, despite his sacking from Chelsea in December, while Pep Guardiola and Fabio Capello rounding out the top three.
