After missing both of Argentina's recent international friendlies, Messi was named on the bench for the Catalan club's match against Vincenzo Montella's Sevilla this past weekend.
Although he was always expected to play a part, the Argentine was introduced in the second half when the Blaugrana were 2-0 down, and close to their first league defeat of the season.
Messi flipped the game on its head as his presence alone seemingly put Sevilla on the back foot, before he eventually scored a dramatic late equaliser with a strike from outside the box in the 88th minute to seal a point for Barca.
Despite the 30-year-old's energetic display in his 35-minute cameo, AS reported that Messi was given two very strict instructions by manager Ernesto Valverde before stepping on to the pitch.
It is believed that Messi was told "to avoid long sprints, and to avoid sudden changes of pace", two of the forward's biggest traits.
The Barca boss admitted after the game that the attacker was carrying a knock, although he will be expected to start in the first leg of Barcelona's UEFA Champions League quarter-final clash against Roma on Wednesday.
