The 27-year-old recently made it clear that he wishes to leave the French champions and return to Spain, where two of the country's biggest teams are interested in his signature.
While Neymar reportedly prefers the idea of returning to the Catalan giants, he has also been linked with Los Blancos, although negotiations with his former club are said to be under way.
It did, however, for a long time appear that PSG would be unwilling to enter into discussions with Barca, which led to another team entering the race for his signature, and it is another club he once played for.
Jose Carlos Peres, Santos' president, has now revealed that he tried to bring Neymar back to the Brazilian side on a six-month loan.
"That was a possibility. It was complicated, of course, but it was an option," Peres told Globo Esporte.
"We tried to bring him here for six months until December.
"We spoke with people close to his father, but it wasn't possible."
Neymar now seems closer than ever to leaving PSG in this transfer window, with Barca once again the favourites to land his signature.
