Lionel Messi night went from bad to worse after Liverpool knocked his FC Barcelona out of the UEFA Champions League before the Catalan’s team bus left him behind, and it ended with a reported “ugly” altercation with his own club’s fans at the airport.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Messi clashed with angry Barca fans, who waited for him at the Liverpool airport. He arrived after his teammates at the airport after doping officials forced him to stay behind for a routine control.
At the airport’s security checkpoint, a small group of Barca fans are claimed to have confronted Messi and the Blaugrana captain had to be dragged away by security to avoid a more serious situation.
Messi was only accompanied by his personal security guard and manager Pepe Costa at the time, while another set of Barcelona fans applauded their superstar.
The 31-year-old was the hero in the first leg, scoring two goals in Barcelona’s 3-0 over Liverpool at Camp Nou. However, he and his teammates could not replicate their display at Anfield and were knocked out by Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, who beat them 4-0 on the night and 4-3 on aggregate.
Messi will now have to wait another year for the next chance to lift his fifth Champions League trophy.
