Reports: Lionel Messi Asked FC Barcelona For Manchester City Move Last Season
FC Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi reportedly asked to leave the Spanish giants for Manchester City last season.
According to Mundo Deportivo, the Argentine was keen on joining his former boss Pep Guardiola at the Citizens.
The 29-year-old was in a bad space this time last year after losing the Copa America final a second time in 12 months with his national team, and was then also accused of tax fraud in Spain.
Messi even retired from international football briefly during that period, and many thought he would seek an exit from the Camp Nou.
At the time, City were said to be willing to pay a world record fee of €150 million (R2.2 billion) for the superstar, and Blaugrana president Josep Maria Bartomeu and vice-president Jordi Mestre flew out to the US to talk to Jorge Messi, the player's father and manager, about the situation.
The talks apparently did not go well, however, and it was only when Messi's close friend and teammate Luis Suarez intervened that the Argentine changed his mind about leaving Barca, according to Mundo Deportivo.
Suarez apparently took Messi out for dinner one night so the player could vent his frustrations, and a few weeks down the line the Albiceleste captain revealed that he would not be leaving the club after all.
