The Portuguese was linked with a move to Manchester United early in the past window, soon after he was accused of evading tax by Spanish authorities.
With some major European publications reporting that the Portugal captain was interested in a return to the Red Devils, Los Blancos were believed to have been lining up his replacement in Kylian Mbappe.
According to the Sunday Times, Real were even willing to sell the 32-year-old back to United, although club president Florentino Perez wanted to ensure they signed Mbappe first.
However, manager Zinedine Zidane made it clear he wanted Ronaldo to stay at Real so the Spanish club apparently ended their interest in Mbappe, who has since joined Paris Saint-Germain on loan, with the move set to be made permanent next season.
Instead of Ronaldo, Jose Mourinho lured the likes of Victor Lindelof, Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic to Old Trafford during the off-season.
The Portuguese attacker has scored 407 goals in 396 club matches since his move to Real in 2009.
