With Lionel Messi being a notable absentee from the unveiling of FC Barcelona's new home kit on Tuesday, why the superstar was not included has now reportedly been revealed.
The Catalan giants unveiled their new home strip for the 2021/22 campaign earlier this week, with the only first-team players involved in the launch being Ansu Fati and Riqui Puig, while Gerard Pique, Antoine Griezmann, Sergi Roberto and Pedri could be seen modelling the kit in promotional material.
The unveiling also included players from the club's reserve team as well the women's team, who recently won the UEFA Women's Champions League.
With many wondering why club captain and talisman Messi was not included in the launch, Spanish publication El Mundo Deportivo has now reported that the photos were taken on 19 March, before the latest contract negotiations between the Argentine and the club had been opened.
The five-time Ballon d'Or winner is the only first-team Blaugrana player who will be out of contract next month, and is yet pen a new deal with the club he has spent his entire professional career at to date.
The latest reports surrounding Messi's future at the Camp Nou suggest he is expected to sign a new, two-year contract with the Catalan outfit, while Major League Soccer club Inter Miami, who are partly owned by David Beckham, are looking to persuade the player to move to the US after that deal expires.
