According to British publication the Daily Record, Messi has agreed a three-year contract with City, while he will spend another two campaigns with sister club New York City thereafter.
The report goes in line with similar claims by Spanish newspaper Sport, who reported the same contract structure.
The 33-year-old would earn a whopping €700 million (R13.8 billion) over five years with the City Football Group – Man City's holding company – with the overall amount believed to include a signing-on bonus.
The deal would allow the Abu Dhabi-based group to realise their dream of signing Messi after already luring Pep Guardiola to Manchester.
It is claimed that "a source familiar with the negotiations" has stated that Messi has also been offered an equity stake in the City Football Group as part of his compensation package.
The six-time Ballon d'Or winner is said to have chosen to join City because he believes they give him the best chance to lift another UEFA Champions League title.
"Messi thinks Guardiola took the best football out of him, and he wants to repeat that," a source close to the player said, as per the Daily Record.
Meanwhile, Barcelona and their captain are still stuck in a battle over his "free exit" clause. City have reportedly indicated that they could walk away from their agreement with Messi should he not be allowed to leave the Camp Nou for free.
Jorge Messi, the superstar's father and agent, is understood to be arriving in the Catalan city on Wednesday to meet president Josep Maria Bartomeu for crunch talks.
It remains to be seen if Barca and Messi's team can agree to an amicable exit, or if the case will end up in court. City, meanwhile, are watching from the sidelines but are seemingly ready to pounce on the opportunity to sign one of the greatest players in football history.
