The 33-year-old has always pointed out that he is a family person and even spilled the beans on how difficult it was to tell his children about his intentions to leave Barcelona ahead the current campaign.

"Mateo is still little and he doesn't realise what it means to go somewhere else and make your life a few years elsewhere," he told Goal in an exclusive interview last year.

"Thiago, he is older. He heard something on TV and found out something and asked.

"I didn't want him to know anything about being forced to leave, to have to live in a new school, or make new friends.

"He cried to me and said 'let's not go'. I repeat that it was hard, really.”

Messi ended up staying at the Camp Nou because he didn’t want to take his club to court but his current deal is running out by the end of June.

There are rumours that he is keen on staying in Spain afterall, but he could also still leave, with the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City understood to be interested in his services.

At PSG, he would link up with two of his eldest son Thiago’s favourite players, namely Kylian Mbappe and Neymar, while the nine-year-old even likes his father’s longstanding rival Cristiano Ronaldo.

"He talks a lot about Luis (Suarez), with whom we have the best relationship, about (Antoine) Griezmann and Arturo (Vidal) since the first day because of his hair and all that," Messi senior told Mundo Deportivo in 2020.

"Also about people from outside of Spain, (Kylian) Mbappe, Cristiano (Ronaldo), Neymar. Yeah, Thiago knows them all, he asks questions and likes them a lot."
