Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are the leading stars for Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, but it has now been proven that Los Blancos depend more on their superstar.
Ronaldo has scored 30 La Liga goals for Real this season, while Messi currently sits on 27 strikes.
However, even if we would take away all goals scored by Ronaldo and Messi, their respective clubs would still lead the La Liga table.
But there would be a slight change at the top, with Barcelona taking the lead over Carlo Ancelotti’s side.
With Ronaldo and Messi in the perspective, Real currently lead Barcelona by two points. Los Blancos have 61 points and Barcelona collected 59, with Atletico Madrid following in third on 54 points.
Without the two superstars, however, Barcelona would have collected 57 points, while Real would only have 56.
This means, Ronaldo’s goals are making a difference of five points, while Messi’s strikes only account for two points.
Without the Portuguese’s goals Real would have drawn to Elche (5-1 win, 4 goals Ronaldo), Celta Vigo (3-0 win, 3 goals Ronaldo) and lost to Villarreal on the weekend (1-1 draw, 1 goal Ronaldo).
Barcelona, meanwhile, would only have drawn the game against Villarreal without Messi’s one goal (3-2 victory).
Note, this calculation doesn’t include how assists by both players would have impacted on the outcome of their respective games.
But it does show that Real Madrid depend more on the goals by Ronaldo, than Barcelona depend on Lionel Messi.
