In a 1-0 win over Percy Tau’s Brighton & Hove Albion on Wednesday night in the Premier League, Raheem Sterling officially surpassed Lionel Messi as Pep Guardiola’s most-used player.
Guardiola has managed some big names in his illustrious career, with the likes of Messi, Xavi Hernandez, Andres Iniesta, Robert Lewandowski and Kevin De Bruyne featuring on that star-studded list.
No player, however, has played in more matches under the Spanish tactician than Sterling, who made his 220th appearance for City since Guardiola’s arrival in England, according to talkSPORT.
Previously, Messi was the former FC Barcelona manager’s most-used player with 219 appearances, but it is a record he no longer holds.
Sterling was introduced as a second-half substitute in City’s 1-0 win over Brighton in the Premier League on Wednesday, a match in which Bafana Bafana international Tau started for the away side.
Though Sterling made history, he might want to forget his cameo after he missed an injury-time penalty as he blazed over the crossbar with a wayward effort.
