Reigning Serie A champions Juventus recorded their first win of the pre-season after beating domestic rivals Inter Milan in the International Champions Cup.
Result: Juventus 1 (4) - 1 (3) Inter Milan
Date: Wednesday, 24 July 2019
Venue: Nanjing Olympic Sports Center, China
Juventus continued their pre-season preparations on Wednesday with a friendly clash against Inter Milan, and named both Cristiano Ronaldo and Matthijs de Ligt both in their starting line-up.
The match was friendly in name only and progressed in a fiery fashion, with neither side afraid to commit to challenges. Both clubs gave away early fouls and the opening goal came from an infringement by Juventus' Joao Cancelo.
Inter won a corner from the resultant free-kick and took the lead after Juve new-boy De Ligt inadvertently turned Roberto Gagliardini's flick-on into his own net.
Ronaldo and striker partner Gonzalo Higuain were ineffective in the opening stanza and Inter looked the better side, nearly doubling their lead just before the break when Wojciech Szczesny spilled a routine catch on to the top of his net.
Szczesny and Higuain were both substituted for the start of the second half, and the Bianconeri came out sharper after the break, with Ronaldo and Adrien Rabiot both forcing substitute goalkeeper Daniele Padelli into making strong saves.
The Portuguese forward wasn't to be denied, however, and equalised for Juve in the 68th minute from a free-kick that was deflected over Padelli's head.
That was to be the last of the significant action before the final whistle, however, as neither side was able to find the breakthrough, and the match progressed to a penalty shootout.
Returning club legend Gianluigi Buffon proved the hero in the shootout after the 41-year old saved three of Inter's spot-kicks to hand Juve the win.
The Bianconeri's next confirmed friendly is against Atletico Madrid, and will take place on 10 August.
