A Selecao were defeated 2-1 by Serbia on the weekend, a result that means Fernando Santos' men will have to go to the play-offs in order to stand a chance of making it to the World Cup next year.
After the game, Ronaldo was seen throwing his hands in the air in disbelief during an interaction with 2016 UEFA European Championship-winning boss Santos.
The Manchester United forward has now issued a message to Portugal supporters, insisting that he and his colleagues know exactly what is required to get to the tournament in 2022.
"Football has shown us time and again that sometimes it's the winding roads that lead us to the most desired outcomes," he wrote on Instagram.
"Yesterday's result was tough but not enough to bring us down. The goal of attending World Cup 2022 is still very much alive and we know what we have to do to get there. No excuses. Portugal bound for Qatar."
What is the play-off process?
A total of 12 nations will take part in the play-off round, made up of 10 teams who finished second in their respective groups and the top-ranked sides who have not yet qualified.

The 12 nations will be separated into three different groups, with the four sides in each group participating in a semi-final before a potential final. The three winners of those finals will take part in the competition in 2022.
