Philippe Coutinho is FC Barcelona’s most expensive signing in history, but the Brazilian could reportedly be sold to pave the way for a sensational Neymar return.
The attacking midfielder was bought for €140 million (R2.23 billion) plus add-ons from Liverpool in the previous January window but has since failed to live up to expectations.
The 26-year-old scored 10 goals in 22 appearances for Barcelona in the second half of the 2017/18 campaign, but has only netted six times this season so far.
As a consequence of his mediocre form, Ernesto Valverde started Coutinho on the bench in the last four LaLiga games and he could soon even be sold in order to finance Neymar’s return.
The Paris Saint-Germain superstar is understood to be keen to come back to Camp Nou, but would cost similar to his world-record fee of €222 million (R3.53 billion) that saw him leave Spain for France.
Neymar’s entourage reportedly met with Barca’s South American scout Andre Cury, who helped to bring Neymar to Europe in the first place, over the Christmas break.
According to the Evening Standard, Coutinho could now be sacrificed to help raise funds for Neymar’s move, ironically making way for the player he came to replace.
