Mbappe is yet to make a decision on his future in the French capital, with some reports in Spain suggesting he is likely to make the switch to Real Madrid on a free transfer.
Los Blancos had two bids rejected for the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner in the previous transfer window, before Leonardo called for the Spanish club to be punished for the very public pursuit of their star.
The Les Parisiens sporting director has now insisted he wants Mbappe to stay in Paris, but added that the club must respect whatever decision he makes at the end of the season.
"If Mbappe decides to stay, he will stay because it is our wish," Leonardo told Le JDD.
"It is a complicated situation because we would like him to stay his whole life and we have to respect his position.
"I think there are still good opportunities to renew his contract. I believe in that."
