Lionel Messi's father reportedly met with FC Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu on Wednesday to negotiate his son's exit from the club – here is what reportedly transpired during the tense meeting.
Last week Tuesday, six-time Ballon d'Or winner Messi sent shockwaves through the world football when he officially informed Barcelona of his decision to leave the club.
His message, however, was not well received by president Bartomeu, who has insisted the player is under contract until June 2021, and would only be able to leave in this transfer window if his release clause is activated.
The Manchester City target, meanwhile, is said to believe he is free to move on from the Blaugrana, although the transfer saga is likely to last for a few more weeks.
On Wednesday, Messi's father Jorge, who also acts as his agent, is understood to have sat down with Bartomeu to discuss matters, but failed to make progress in convincing the board that his son should be able to leave in this window.
According to Mundo Deportivo, the Blaugrana president insisted that the 33-year-old will not be allowed to move on ahead of the 2020/21 season, and that he will only entertain negotiations over a new contract for the Argentine.
Messi's dad, however, is completely unmoved in his stance that his son should be able to walk out of the club right away in order to complete a move to City.
