Many believe Brazil superstar Neymar left Spanish giants FC Barcelona to escape five-time Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi's shadow, but his father has now addressed those claims.
The Brazilian became the world's most expensive player ever when he signed for Paris Saint-Germain in 2017, a transfer that caught the footballing world by surprise.
It was widely believed that Neymar left the Camp Nou to become the star man of a team rather than play second fiddle to Messi at the Catalan club.
Asked about those claims recently, his father, who is also his agent, denied that his son left to break away from the Argentine's shadow.
"It was not to get out of Messi's shadow," he said, according to Marca.
"It was a very complex situation. We were asked for help to give visibility to a league.
"If you look between the lines, it's much greater than only Neymar's ambition."
Neymar, who is currently injured, has scored 20 goals and assisted a further 11 strikes in just 23 games for PSG so far this season.
