Neymar was not included in Paris Saint-Germain's squad ahead of their Ligue 1 opener amid rumours linking him heavily with FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, and the club now explained why.
The Brazilian was dropped from the squad for PSG’s Ligue 1 opener against Nimes, with sporting director Leonardo confirming talks with an unnamed club have progressed further than before.
"Honestly, it is not just that (transfer rumours)," Leonardo said, as quoted by ESPN.
"We are in discussions and we will see what happens. Until a decision is made, we will manage the situation. Talks exist.
"However, Neymar is also not physically ready for the match either. As long as we are in talks -- today they exist, while they did not before. It is important for everybody that the future is defined. The team must be focused on the game.
"Discussions are more advanced than before, but that does not mean that there is an agreement. What needs to be defined is if he stays and plays or goes."
Meanwhile, coach Thomas Tuchel explained the official reason why Neymar is not in the squad for the 2019/20 Ligue 1 opener.
"I have not spoken with Neymar. I am the coach. I speak with him about training," Tuchel added.
"He is still a little injured and took knocks on Friday, as well as Saturday. Neymar did not complete a full week of training with the squad, so he cannot play against Nimes."
The 27-year-old has been linked with both Spanish giants, but it remains to be seen whether it’s Barca, Real or another side who are in “advanced talks” with PSG.
Italian side Juventus have also been linked with Neymar and could offer Paulo Dybala and Gianluigi Buffon in a potential swap deal.
