Paris Saint-Germain superstar Neymar has opened up about how five-time Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi helped him during his time at FC Barcelona, claiming that the 'best in the world' showed him affection when 'he needed help the most'.
The Brazilian superstar enjoyed a trophy-laden four-year stint with the LaLiga giants, and was part of one of the world's most feared attacking trios known as "MSN", alongside Messi and Luis Suarez, before becoming the world's most expensive player in August 2017 after penning a staggering deal worth €222 million (R3.4 billion) to join PSG.
Neymar, who is currently undergoing rehabilitation for a metatarsal injury in Brazil, has expressed his gratitude for the role Messi played during their time together at the Camp Nou.
"I tell it for everybody now, that when I needed help the most, the best in the world (Messi) showed me affection," he told Marca.
"It's difficult, it's difficult. To be honest, it is very difficult because Leo was a very special guy for me at Barcelona."
The 27-year-old also revealed that the Argentine sent him a text message upon his arrival at the Camp Nou from Santos in 2013, which read "I'm here to help you", and also advised Neymar not to be afraid of him or anyone else at the club.
Neymar registered 186 appearances for Barca, finding the back of the net on 105 occasions and being on hand to assist a further 76 strikes.
