Manchester United’s record signing, Angel Di Maria, has revealed that he took the iconic No.7 jersey at his new club after being inspired by Cristiano Ronaldo.
Di Maria says that Ronaldo told him how important the number was at the club and that he hopes he can prove as successful as the previous incumbents of the jerseys.
"I am aware of importance of the No.7 shirt," Di Maria said at his unveiling.
"Cristiano Ronaldo had spoken to me at Real Madrid and told me how important it was.
"I wanted to wear it and to be able to do as much for the club as Ronaldo and all the others (who have worn it).”
Di Maria also played down the pressure that will be placed on his shoulders after he signed for a British-record transfer fee and that he hopes to help his new team seal a place in next season’s Champions League.
"It does not bother me that £60m has been paid for me. I come here to work and play for the club and to do the best I can for Manchester United," he added.
"I'm very pleased to play for Manchester United. I want to help the team get into the Champions League."
Di Maria is in line to make his debut at Burnley on Saturday for their third match of the new Premier League season.
