A former Argentine World Cup winner has weighed on the debate about who is the country's greatest player between Diego Maradona and Lionel Messi.
While some view Maradona as the greatest to play the game, there some who are of the opinion that Messi should stake claim to that title.
Messi has won numerous trophies at club level with Barcelona, but he is yet to replicate for the national side, where Maradona has won a World Cup title.
Mario Kempes, who won the 1972 World Cup, alluded to the fact that Maradona had no real direct rival like Messi, who has been competing with Cristiano Ronaldo over the past decade.
"What's the problem that people have here in Spain with Maradona and Messi? They spend the whole day comparing them," Kempes was quoted as saying by AS.
"Personally, I put both of them of a pedestal during their respective eras. One difference if that while Maradona had no one to rival him during his time, Messi did - first there was Ronaldinho and then there was Cristiano… and in spite of all of that, he continues to be the best, because as it stands today, Messi is the best player in the world".
