FC Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi has written his name in his national team's history books following his brace in Argentina's 7-0 win over Bolivia.

He came on as a second-half substitute in the 65th minute and scored Argentina's fifth goal just two minutes later. He completed his brace in the 76th minute.

Those two goals means the Argentina captain has become the first player in his country's history to score against all other nine South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) countries, according to the Twitter account MisterChip.

The 28-year-old has netted four against Paraguay and Brazil, three against Venezuela and Uruguay, two against Chile, Colombia and now Bolivia, and one against Ecuador and Peru.

Overall, Messi became just the fourth South American player to score against all nine CONMEBOL opponents, behind Brazil legend Zico, Colombian Arnoldo Iguaran and Ecuadorian Agustin Delgado.

The Barcelona talisman also reached another milestone in the match against Bolivia: following his two strikes, he became only the sixth South American to score 48 or more goals for his country.

Brazil legend Pele leads the ranking with 77 goals, ahead of his countryman Ronaldo, who scored 62 for the national team.

Messi is still eight goals short of Argentina's all-time record scorer Gabriel Batistuta, who is on 56 goals, while Romario (55) and Zico (48) also hit this milestone before the Blaugrana star.
