According to Spanish publication Marca, Messi gave the forward a call to talk him out of joining 13-time UEFA Champions League winners Real, urging him to return to the Camp Nou instead.
On Monday, Neymar's lawyers were spotted at Barca's offices, a day after the Brazilian was left out of PSG's squad for their first Ligue 1 match of the season.
While Real are reportedly genuinely interested in the player, they believe they are being used to pressure their LaLiga rivals into launching an official bid for his services.
