With July being just a few months away, there are plenty of footballers who will be moving to new clubs for free if their contracts are not extended by the end of the current campaign.
Among them, arguably the biggest name is Barcelona captain Messi, whose future appears to be no closer to being resolved than at the turn of the year. It is widely claimed that the Argentine will wait until after his club's presidential elections to make a decision, with Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain said to be on high alert.
The 33-year-old has reportedly been in contact with both clubs over the past year, having attempted to leave the Blaugrana at the start of the 2020/21 season. Messi was, however, forced to remain in Spain, although that will likely not be the case come July.
If the six-time Ballon d'Or winner decides against extending his contract with Barca, he will be allowed to depart as a free agent, but that does not mean the Argentine's signature will come cheap for any suitor.

Messi, according to reports, is the highest-paid footballer in the world, and would likely command a big signing-on fee from whichever club he joins should he call time on what has been an incredible story at Barcelona.
Over in Madrid, skipper Ramos faces a similar situation to his LaLiga rival, although he might already have made up his mind as to whether he will stay or go. The Spain centre-back is said to be likely to leave Los Blancos at the end of the season, with PSG also circling for his signature.
Bayern Munich centre-back David Alaba has already announced he will move on from the German giants in June, but is reportedly yet to strike a deal with another club. Real, however, appear to be favourites to sign the Austria international.
AC Milan's impressive 22-year-old goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma is yet to put pen to paper on a new contract in Italy, although a new deal for the shot-stopper is believed to be on the table. In England, Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum could be departing the Reds in just a few months if a new contract is not agreed, and the same could be said for Di Maria at PSG.
