Following Lionel Messi's latest Ballon d'Or win, the FC Barcelona superstar's mother has made a surprise admission about her son's most recent achievement.
After the 32-year-old was awarded the Ballon d'Or for his exploits in 2019, many claimed he might have known well before the actual ceremony in Paris due to his family and delegates from Barcelona being present.
Most leaked lists prior to the awards night also had the Argentine in pole position, which turned out to be true on Monday night, when Messi claimed the prize a record sixth time.
His mom, Celia, however, has insisted that the family did not anticipate the Catalan club superstar winning the accolade.
"I'm super happy, we did not expect to win the prize," she told CNN Radio Argentina.
"We thought that the fifth (in 2015) would be the last, so this was a beautiful surprise.
"He always excites me. He does not stop surprising us every day with what he achieves.
"And, on top of that, what a person he is, which is the main thing."
