Lionel Messi's Incredible Argentina Record Revealed
It has often been said that Lionel Messi carries the Argentina team, and these incredible stats reveals how true the notion was in their 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign.
The Argentine netted all three goals in the Albiceleste's crucial 3-1 away win in Ecuador on Wednesday morning to seal their ticket to Russia 2018.
Following his heroics this week, Messi is now the only Argentina player to have scored for the national team in a competitive match in almost a whole calendar year.
Messi scored the solitary goal in Argentina's 1-0 over Chile on 24 March, as well as all three in the deciding win over Ecuador. The only goal scored by another player in Jorge Sampaoli's side was an own goal in a 1-1 draw against Venezuela on 6 September.
The last two players to score for the two-time World Cup champions were Angel Di Maria and Lucas Pratto, who netted in a 3-0 win over Colombia on 16 November 2016 – a game in which Messi scored the first goal.
Overall, Messi played 10 of Argentina's 18 2018 World Cup qualifiers, and the Albiceleste picked up 21 of their 28 points during their successful qualification for Russia with him on the pitch, and only seven without the superstar.
This means that when the 30-year-old played, they averaged 2.1 points per game, while without him they only got 0.875 points in their qualifiers.
