The Catalans remain hopeful of tying the Argentina international down to a new contract, while Manchester City are reportedly aiming to sign him on a free at the end of the campaign.

In the latest transfer window, Messi publicly revealed that he wanted to leave the Blaugrana, but with legal action becoming the only possible way to achieve this, he decided to stay on.

According to Marca, Messi's wage demands are not the only contentious issue at the moment, with the presidential change being key in his decision.

Josep Maria Bartomeu, who did not have a good relationship with the Barca talisman, stepped down recently. It is claimed that Messi wants a say in what happens next, and needs a clear plan of how they aim to get the club back to the top.

Along with this, he also reportedly wants to be informed what the transfer policy will be, and of any changes that happen in regarding sporting directors and coaches.
