Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi admits that his body needs a longer recovery period than it did a few years ago.
The Argentine revealed that his body doesn’t respond to the physical side of football as it did when he was younger, but said that he tries to take more care in the hopes of prolonging his career.
“I’m 27 now and it’s not the same as when I was younger. You continue to grow and age,” he told AS.
“Before, I could do almost anything and my body wouldn’t notice, but now I try to make sure I get some rest and take care about what I eat.”
Messi also dismissed recent talk of Barcelona changing their style of play, where it was suggested that they were replicating the style of their rivals Real Madrid.
“With the pace we have up front, we can play a counter-attacking game and take advantage of the space our rivals leave us, or we can play in our usual way,” the 27-year-old added.
“We haven’t lost the Barca philosophy of patience and short passing.”
Lionel Messi has been in excellent form this season, scoring 26 La Liga goals and assisting 16 in just 23 appearances, and has helped his Catalan club to move within one point of Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid.
