Despite having scored more than 600 goals and winning five Ballons d'Or, many have discredited the 31-year-old's achievements because he has spent his entire senior club career in Spain.
A question some have asked, although it has become a question asked with tongue in cheek, is whether or not Messi would "be able to do it on a cold, wet Tuesday night in Stoke".
Spanish football expert Guillem Balague recently revealed that he asked Messi this very question, and got a sharp response in return.
"I asked Messi about people in England saying: 'You would not do so well on a cold, wet night in Stoke,'" he said, according to the Daily Mirror.
"He said: 'They should have seen the pitches I played on in Rosario.'"
