There has been a huge development regarding Lionel Messi's future, after his contract at Barcelona expired last month.

News breaking in Spain suggests that the 34-year-old has agreed a new, five-year deal with the Catalan club following the expiration of his deal in June. 

According to Sport, Messi has accepted a wage cut of more than 50% as he wants to be an example to those around him. 

While it was initially claimed that the six-time Ballon d'Or winner was going to extend his stay by two years, it seems he has committed to a long-term project under Joan Laporta's presidency.

It is further claimed that the agreement has been reached in principle, although is only likely to be finalised and confirmed over the coming weeks.
