Despite the Argentine losing out on the Ballon d’Or and the FIFA Best Men’s award this year, he has been named as FourFourTwo’s best player of this calendar year.
The publication credited the 30-year-old for how he has essentially pulled Barca out of a crisis so far this season, following the drama that surrounded the club in August.
Neymar’s exit from Barca and their failure to sign Philippe Coutinho had the world pointing fingers at the Catalan club, who are still unbeaten this season since their Spanish Super Cup loss to Real Madrid.
Messi has scored 39 La Liga goals in 2017, which according to the publication, is 15 more than any other player, while he also has five league goals more than anyone in Europe’s top five leagues.
Second to the Argentine was Los Blancos superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, while Paris Saint-Germain’s Neymar finished in third place.
This season, Messi has scored 18 goals and created a further seven strikes in 24 matches this season.
