Ernesto Valverde took on Carlos Tevez and Boca in a friendly cup late on Wednesday evening, where he, as well as Malcom and Rafinha, found the back of the net in their 3-0 victory.
Before the match started, Messi addressed the Camp Nou faithful with a microphone in hand to talk reveal pride at being named the team’s new captain, and insisted the Catalans will do everything they can to lift the UEFA Champions League this season.
"For me it's a huge pride to be the captain," he said, according to Sport.
"I know what it means and I have the luck of having great predecessors like (Carles) Puyol, Xavi and last of all the great Andres (Iniesta), who we will miss a lot," said Messi.
"We have a squad to get excited about, those who have arrived will help us to improve a lot and if last year was very good with the Copa and La Liga, it's true we have remembered what happened to us in the Champions League with our elimination and this year we will do everything possible to bring this beautiful cup back to Camp Nou."
Barca last won the competition in the 2014/15 season, with rivals Real Madrid lifting the trophy for the last three years in a row.
