Although Lionel Messi was nowhere near his best in Barca's 1-0 win over Real Valladolid on Saturday, he scored the penalty that gave the Catalan giants the victory, with that strike taking him to 22 league goals for the season.
The Argentine is thus at the top the Golden Boot ranking thus far, but following him closely is Mbappe, who has scored 19 league goals, and Ronaldo, who has found the back of the net the same number of times in this campaign.
Fourth in the ranking is Mbappe's PSG colleague Edinson Cavani, who has struck on 17 occasions in Ligue 1 so far this season.
A few other high-profile stars are on the same number of league goals as the Uruguayan, including Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah.
Ronaldo will certainly be hoping to catch Messi in the race for the top goalscorer in Europe prize – the Argentine has won the Golden Boot a record five times, while the Portuguese has won the accolade on four occasions.
New AC Milan striker Krzysztof Piatek climbed into the top 10 with his brace at the weekend – he has now scored six goals in his first five matches across all competitions for his new club.
The points system for the European Golden Boot is determined by the league's rankings based on the UEFA co-efficient. Goals scored in the top five leagues, namely LaLiga, the Premier League, the Bundesliga, Serie A and Ligue 1, are multiplied by a factor of two, while goals scored in the leagues ranked six to 21 are multiplied by a factor of 1.5 and goals scored in leagues ranked lower are multiplied by one.
