With Lionel Messi having now completed the first half of his debut season in France, a pundit has claimed that the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner is completely unrecognisable from the player he has been throughout his career.
The Argentine joined Paris Saint-Germain as a free agent in August after Barcelona made it clear to the 34-year-old that they could not offer him a new deal due to his contract demands and their financial struggles.
His arrival in Paris was met with huge excitement and anticipation, although his contribution so far seems to have left little to be desired, with the forward having only scored six goals in 16 appearances across all competitions.
French football journalist and pundit Nabil Djellit has now weighed in on Messi's situation in Ligue 1, saying the ex-Blaugrana superstar has not performed to the standards many expected of him.
"If I had been told that Lionel Messi was going to land in Ligue 1. What I see during this first part of the season, Lionel Messi; I say Lionel Messi only scored one goal; for me, it is science fiction. But that's the reality, unfortunately," he said on La Chaine L'Equipe.
"He lacks success. He is not the player we know; he is not a player who looks like a seven-time Ballon d'Or player. He is unrecognisable.
"There is what PSG's fault is, but there is also what he is doing, which is far from what we can hope for; we're talking about Lionel Messi!"
Messi has struck just one league goal in 11 matches for PSG, while he has also assisted a further five strikes. In Europe, meanwhile, he has scored five times in as many games.
