Although LaLiga’s president is a self-confessed Real Madrid supporter, he believes FC Barcelona’s Lionel Messi is the most key player in the history of the league.
Following his debut in the Spanish top flight in 2005, Messi has taken the league by storm with his goals, assists and incredible dribbling.
Asked whether he believes the Argentine will remain at the Catalan club beyond his current deal, LaLiga president Javier Tebas insisted he is the most important star to ever grace Spanish shores.
"Messi is part of Barcelona and will stay there," he said, according to Marca.
"We consider him part of LaLiga Santander and he transcends normal players.
"He’s an icon, the most important player that has passed through our league. He is a level above."
Messi holds the record for the most goals in LaLiga (405) and the most assists (164) in history, while he has won the league on nine occasions.
